Godot Dialogue
The sun is beginning to set as Estragon sits on a low mound fiddling with his boot
Vladimir: What is it with you and your boot?
Estragon: I’m taking it off.
Vladimir: I can see that but why?
Estragon: I’m going to bed
Vladimir: Bed, what do you mean you’re going to bed? You haven’t been to bed since……….well………..
Estragon: I go to bed every night and every night I take off my boots and put them beside my bed.
Vladimir: That ditch is not a bed. Have you forgotten? The feel of clean dry sheets, a plumped up pillow and the warmth a winter’s morning would steal from you if it were not for the dying embers of a faithful fire. Soggy mud and a few dried leaves are not a bed……and why would you want to take your boots off out here? What if those men came back and beat you? Or a boar comes shuffling by? You’d want your boots on then.
Estragon: It’s proper to take your boots off before getting into bed. And socks if I had any. That’s just the way it is.
Vladimir murmurs to himself: ‘That’s just the way it is. That’s just the way it is. Stupid fool.’
Vladimir: You can’t go to bed yet anyway.
Estragon: Why not? I can if I want.
Vladimir: You can’t go yet because we are waiting for Godot. What if you fall asleep and we miss him?
Estragon: Well you’re here, aren’t you?
Vladimir: I remember hearing boots, stomping through the streets like a herd of buffalo breaking everything in their path. Do you remember when they came?
Estragon: When buffalo came? No I don’t recall that.
Vladimir: Not buffalo, you fool.
Estragon: But you said buffalo.
Vladimir: I know I said buffalo but I didn’t mean buffalo.
Estragon: Then why did you say buffalo?
Vladimir: Because they sounded like buffalo.
Estragon: Who sounded like buffalo?
Vladimir: They did, when they came.
Estragon: When who came? Do you mean Godot? I didn’t hear him come.
Vladimir: No, we are still waiting for Godot.
Estragon: Do you think Godot will sound like buffalo? I don’t think I would sleep through that.
